![]() ![]() Keep looking and you won’t find anybody for about 20 years, at least when it comes to the college ranks. Of note for Flames fans, Werenski just completed his rookie season with Columbus and was fantastic out of the gates, quarterbacking the Blue Jackets power play by the mid-way point of the season. A 2015 first round pick, Werenski registered a PPG pace in his sophomore season as a teenager (36 points in 36 games). Zach Werenski is the first obvious comparable. The list of teenaged defenders who managed a PPG pace or better in their college freshman season is also very short. If we assume there are another 25 players from recent drafts that will reach the 300 mark, that means just three percent of the roughly 3,000 drafted defensemen will have turned into 300-point players in the NHL. Of players drafted since 1960, there have only been 44 defensemen who have recorded 500 or more points over their career, and 75 that have recorded 300 or more points. So the question is - how good is Adam Fox? And is it possible to put his results to date in context?ĭrafting elite scoring from the backend is rare. In fact, Fox’s freshman season is considered the best offensive debut by an 18-year-old defender since Brian Leetch managed 47-points in 37-games for Boston College back in 1986. ![]() For a defenseman, it’s about as rare as a leprechaun riding a unicorn. That rate for a 18-19-year-old freshman forward is fantastic. In his draft-plus-one (D+1) year for Harvard, Fox put up 40-points in 35-games, a point-per-game pace of 1.14. That wasn’t a problem for Fox in his freshman college season, however. Of course, the annals of the NHL draft is littered with smaller guys who put up big numbers in lesser leagues, only to find themselves unable to translate that success at higher levels. He also finished third all-time amongst NTDP players with 83 career assists. Between 2014-16, for example, Fox set a record for assists in a single season for the National Team Development Program (NTDP) with 59. ![]()
